New York: General Motors said Wednesday it is recalling about 1,700 new vehicles in the US and Canada to replace airbags that may not deploy properly in some high-speed crashes.

GM is recalling 1,579 Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Malibu and GMC Canyon vehicles in the US and another 161 in Canada to repair the problem. The vehicles are model-year 2016.

"During a routine quality inspection, it was determined that a component required for a second-stage/high-output deployment was not loaded during the inflator build," GM said.

Dealers will not be able to sell the models until the faulty driver-side front airbag is replaced, it said.

GM said there have been no reports of crashes or injuries due to the problem.

"This issue is unrelated to the ongoing Takata recalls," the largest US automaker said, but did not identify the manufacturer of the defective airbags.

Automakers have recalled some 28 million Takata airbags in the US due to defects linked to several deaths.
