DOHA: Sheikh Dr. Thani Al Thani (pictured), Board Member of the Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) for International Relations and Dr. Minas Khatchadourian, General Legal Councel of QICCA have received an invitation from the Center for International Investment and Commercial Arbitration (CIICA) and UMT School of Law and Policy (SLP) in Pakistan to attend an International Conference in Lahore about the Past, the Present and the Future of Arbitration in Pakistan.
This conference is commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.
Dr. Thani Al Thani participated in the session titled ‘Arbitration in the Energy and Constructions’ sectors. In his presentation, Dr. Al Thani tackled the legal framework of construction related contracts in the Mega Projects undertaken in the State of Qatar.
He explained the importance of applying the provisions of Qatari Laws in particular those related to liquidated damages in case of delays and the causes for termination of the contracts as well as the basis to calculate compensation in case of the breach of the contract.
In his presentation, Dr. Minas Khatchadourian discussed the geographical proximity between Qatar and Pakistan and the historical relations between the two countries.
Dr. Khatchadourian recalled the membership of both countries at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as well as the signature few years ago of a bilateral treaty for the promotion and protection of investments and another treaty to avoid double taxation. He shed light on the importance of the energy contracts and the mechanisms used to determinate the price such as in the supply contracts of LNG or LPG.
The Conference was attended by a large number of Lawyers and Arbitrators who work in the field of International Business Contracts.
