Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that the GCC summit in Kuwait was not disappointing event. Convening the summit and efforts of Emir of Kuwait H H Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah can be considered an achievement given that the region is going through challenging phase.
Regarding the results, he said Qatar was expecting more in terms of the level of the representations and discussions on the issues, he said, talking to Al Jazeera yesterday.
The participation of Qatar was to ensure that the GCC remains as an active organisation. However, lower level of participation in the summit and reduction in the duration of the summit was some of the disappointments.
He said Qatar looked at the summit as an opportunity to discuss issues and bring solutions to end the ongoing crisis.
The Emir of Kuwait has been taking efforts to solve the crisis since the last six months and Qatar was always cooperating in these efforts. Now the unity of GCC is under threat due to the differences among its members.
GCC has been talking for long to transfer from cooperation to unity and this issue was mentioned in the communiqué of the last summit. There is now ambiguity on the future of the GCC.
It seems that there was a pre-planned plot against Qatar. Everyone including, Arabs and other people have understood that the allegations against Qatar are false and the siege countries have failed to produce any evidence in support of their allegations.
He added that there were other issues which needed to be discussed among the head of the states. H H the Emir had attended the summit with good intentions. Other heads of states should have attended the summit in order to show respect towards the efforts of H H the Emir of Kuwait. There has been no communication between Qatar and the blockading country so far which is unprecedented for the GCC region and the world to snap the ties due to some difference. “We hope that there will some discussions to solve the crisis but we are not expecting any major breakthrough in the near future in the issue after the absence of high level representation,” he said.
Regarding the military option, he said: “We were ready for any possible military escalation in the beginning of the crisis. And there were also some provocative statements issued by the officials of blockading countries. According to an assessment it could have happened at that time but today after passing this much time we do not see any concern in this regard.”
