Thomas guides Aahil to Trophy win, bags QR 285,000 prize

Umm Qarn’s homebred Aahil yesterday produced an exhilarating run as jockey Ronan Thomas cornered H H Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy glory at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s Al Rayyan Park. Competing under lights and chilling racing conditions, Thomas rode the Alban de Mieulle-trained 7-year-old horse to a 4¼-length win in the mile run for 4-year-olds Local P/As. Aahil (Munjiz x Daniah) clocked a time of 1:44.64 as Thomas won the top prize of QR 285,000 in the 1600m turf race. Soufiane Saadi, astride Sealine, won the second prize of QR 110,000. Ghali Al Athman, who had Tomas Lukasek in the saddle, finished third. Earlier yesterday, Umm Qarn’s Tayf again won the Gr2 H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani Cup as Thomas rode the Alban de Mieulle-trained 9-yearold to a 3¼-L win in the mile run for 4-year-old P/As. In the day’s sixth running H H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s homebred Eaz Qatar (Amer) won H H Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani Silver Cup. Alberto Sanna rode the Julian Smart-trained 4-year-old filly to a ½-L win in the 2200m run for 4-year-old P/As. Also yesterday, Mohammed Bin Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al Attiya’s Ateej (AF AlBahar) won the Gr3 P/A Majd Al Arab Sprinter Championship. Marco Casamento rode the Jassim Ghazali-trained 8-year-old to a 1¼-length win in the 1100m run for 4-year-old P/As.
