CMU-Q convocation ceremony celebrates largest incoming class in campus history

Doha, Qatar: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) celebrated the largest incoming class in campus history at the Class of 2030 Convocation Ceremony.

The official welcome takes place during Orientation Week, when the new students meet faculty members, learn about expectations, and become acquainted with the many resources available to CMU-Q students. CMU-Q is a Qatar Foundation partner university.

For this academic year, CMU-Q has expanded its first-year class to 140 seats. More than 3,100 students applied for admission this year, which is also a campus record. Students in the first-year class hail from 36 nations across the globe, including CMU-Q’s first-ever students from Honduras and South Sudan.

“Students, tonight you are wearing the robes and tartan stoles of Carnegie Mellon University to symbolise that you are now part of our community,” said Dean of CMU-Q, Michael Trick. “Class of 2030, it is my pleasure to welcome you—officially—to Carnegie Mellon University.”

The Convocation Ceremony is a tradition that marks the beginning of a student’s journey at CMU-Q. The event was emceed by computer science student Junaid Yusuf. Senior associate dean for education, Dudley Reynolds, introduced the faculty and leadership to the new students.

As sophomore speaker, Ali Fawaz Al Ajji gave advice to the new class: “Success at CMU-Q is not about being perfect. It is about asking questions even when you’re afraid to. It is about seeking help when you need it. It is about showing up again after setbacks. And most importantly, it is about realizing that you do not have to do this journey alone.”

CMU-Q offers undergraduate degree programs in artificial intelligence, biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems. Applications for students beginning in the fall of 2027 opened on September 1.
