Doha: Embassy of Sri Lanka in Doha marked the 74th Independence Day of Sri Lanka on Friday  at the Chancery premises. The occasion was attended by embassy staff. 

The Independence Day event commenced with the hoisting of the national flag and the singing of the national anthem of Sri Lanka, followed by observance of two minutes silence in remembrance and honour of all patriots who sacrificed their lives to liberate the motherland. 

Thereafter, multi-faith religious observances were conducted by the religious dignitaries representing the Buddhist, Hindu, Islam and Catholic faiths to bestow the blessings on the people of the country.

The Independence Day messages by the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka were read by the Embassy officials. 

Addressing the gathering, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the State of Qatar, H E M Mafaz Mohideen highlighted the significance of the day in line with the speech made by Sri Lankan President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, addressing the nation at the 74th Independence Day themed “An Affluent Tomorrow and Prosperous Motherland with Challenges Overcome”. 

The Ambassador emphasised the importance of re-dedication of all Sri Lankan expatriates living in Qatar to strive hard to overcome the adverse impact of the current global CVOVID-19 pandemic and support the efforts of the Sri Lankan government to overcome the threats and revive the economy. 

Ambassador Mafaz also valued the long-standing relations between Sri Lanka and the State of Qatar and expressed his gratitude to Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and the friendly people of Qatar for their continued support.

The programme concluded with the serving of traditional Sri Lankan delicacies and refreshments.
