A gathering of senior officials from Qatari State entities, General Counsel from Qatari and International entities were provided with a summary of key developments in Arbitral Institutions, Investment Treaty cases and English Arbitration Act 1996 cases during 2019 by Professor Khawar Qureshi (pictured) QC, Head of McNair Chambers, at an event yesterday.

The increasing use of arbitration and strengthening of arbitral institutional rules to reduce cost as well as delay was highlighted, as well as the importance of ensuring that arbitrations are conducted efficiently by parties and their legal teams.

Professor Qureshi QC commented that “arbitration continues to be seen as preferential to Court resolution of disputes by commercial parties the world over. Qatar has excellent facilities, transport links and an infrastructure which makes it eminently suited to act as a seat for international arbitrations involving parties from many locations, not least Africa as well as Central Asia. The reform of Qatar’s Arbitration Law in 2017 was a very positive step and prioritizing the promotion of Doha as a seat for arbitration will build upon the potential that undoubtedly exists.”
