Doha: The 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, hosted by the Qatar Gymnastics Federation in conjunction with the Qatar Olympic Committee, concluded at the Aspire Dome on Saturday.

The USA topped the medals tally at the end of the 10-day long championships with a total haul of nine medals (four gold, two silver, three bronze). China finished second with six medals (four gold, one silver, one bronze), and Russia third with seven medals (two gold, three silver, two bronze).

Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands and North Korea, were fourth with a gold medal each; while Japan with six medals (three silver, three bronze) finished eighth.

Canada was ninth with two silver, Brazil and Britain 10th with a silver each. The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Italy, Mexico and Germany were 13th with a bronze medal to each nation.

A total of 17 nations from a total of 76 finished with medals at the first world championships of the Middle East.

The success of the championships was celebrated by the hosts at a farewell dinner for all participating delegations.

On the occasion, Ali Al Hitmi, President of the Gymnastics Federation and Executive Director of the Organising Committee congratulated all the participants including athletes, officials, members of the Organising Committee, volunteers and the media for their contribution in making the Doha Worlds 2018 in Qatar a memorable tournament.

He also congratulated all those who won the medals and qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

He thanked the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) for its confidence in awarding the first edition in the Middle East to Qatar and for its cooperation.
