Doha, Qatar: From advanced road networks to autonomous vehicles, Qatar is accelerating efforts to build an integrated, resilient transportation system that supports economic growth and enhances quality of life through safer, smarter, and more sustainable mobility.
At the heart of this transformation is the Transportation Master Plan for Qatar 2050, which will guide investments in infrastructure, expand road and public transport networks in line with urban growth and future mobility needs, and prioritise sustainability by promoting environmentally friendly transport, reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening the sector’s financial sustainability through demand management policies and public-private partnerships.
In-Charge of the Road Affairs Department at the Ministry of Transport, Eng. Nayla Khaled Al Nuaimi, said the autonomous electric taxi project reflects Qatar’s commitment to adopting the latest smart transport technologies to deliver safer, more efficient and sustainable services.
She said the successful trial demonstrated the readiness of the required operational and technical systems and paved the way for a second phase involving fully driverless operations in coordination with relevant authorities.
The first phase, launched in August 2025, followed more than 2,500 trial journeys, achieving an operational success rate exceeding 94 percent without human intervention while recording high user satisfaction, despite the presence of a safety officer inside the vehicles.
Al Nuaimi said the ministry continues to expand smart transport through AI-powered traffic management systems, camera- and sensor-based monitoring networks, integrated digital platforms linking Doha Metro, buses, taxis and limousine services, and real-time passenger information systems.
