Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Dr Ali bin Sumaikh Al Marri met yesterday with a delegation of the Senate and the Parliament of the Italian Republic, chaired by MP Guglielmo Vaccaro. Al Marri presented a detailed explanation of the grave and growing humanitarian consequences caused by the siege whether on the citizens of Qatar or citizens of the other three countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council, after nearly five months.
The NHRC Chairman called on the Italian Parliament deputies to join the efforts of their government and deputies of other European parliaments who he had met during his last trip to Madrid, London and Paris, along with the US senators and congressmen who have confirmed their support for the humanitarian cause resulted by the siege.
He praised the honourable positions of the European Union, which promised strong action considering that prolonging the crisis would threaten international peace and security.
Dr Al Marri said he was not asking for the support to Qatar in its political cause, but for the victims of the unjust siege which affects the citizens and residents of Qatar as well as the three GCC countries, noting that any country has the right to sever ties with another country in case of political differences, but this must not affect the people. He underlined that condemnation positions are no longer sufficient in light of the increasing suffering of thousands of affected people, calling on all parliaments and international human rights organisations to step up their efforts and exert more pressure to force the siege countries to respond to the calls of the victims. He also reviewed the complaints received by the NHRC since the beginning of the siege, stressing that the violations of the siege countries and their repercussions on the lives of people are increasing day after day.
