On behalf of the Arab Group at the United Nations, Qatar has expressed reservation about Israel's candidacy for one of the posts of the UN Deputy General Assembly at its 72nd session.
This came in a statement of Qatar delivered by the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador H E Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani on behalf of the Arab Group.
Sheikha Alia said that this post required respect for the principles of the international law and the UN resolutions, including those of the General Assembly, explaining that Israel is constantly and deliberately violating those resolutions.
With the approach of the 50th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories since 1967, Sheikha Alia stressed that the key to peace with Israel and the acceptance of their eligibility in all international forums, including the United Nations, requires its commitment to its responsibilities in accordance with the UN Charter and respect for the principles of international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy.
Sheikha Alia added that peace with Israel also requires ending its occupation of all Arab territories occupied since 1967 on the basis of the Arab peace initiative, and its recognition of the right of the occupied Arab peoples to self-determination, freedom and independence, including the Palestinian people who are still suffering from the scourge of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian land, including East Jerusalem.
Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani stressed that the Arab Group declares its reservation on this candidacy.
