Doha, Qatar: The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced an opportunity for emerging screenwriters and writer-directors in Qatar and the MENA region as it is now accepting applications for its Short Script Lab, scheduled to take place from November 25 to December 7.

“If you’re an emerging screenwriter and/or writer-director from Qatar and/or the MENA region, sign up for our online short scriptwriting lab which will guide you on how to complete a new draft of your original short film screenplay,” it said on its social media accounts.

This initiative presents a promising gateway for aspiring filmmakers to have their scripts considered for production through various DFI programmes, including Qumra Shorts, Qatari Film Fund, and Production Funding (MENA region) opportunities available.

DFI explained that “the online short scriptwriting lab provides an inspiring, intensive programme that balances virtual one-on-one mentorship sessions and independent work with moderated group discussions among peers.”

Moreover, it said that the programme not only enhances scriptwriting skills but also advances the development of short film screenplays. Participants will gain valuable insights into both regional and international short film landscapes, thanks to in-depth case studies of recent successful short films and their creators. Also, the lab introduces participants to the intricacies of film packaging, including drafting synopses, intent notes, mood boards, and short film production opportunities.

The online sessions are scheduled from 3pm to 7:30pm, with flexibility to accommodate the needs of selected participants. DFI encourages all interested filmmakers to apply, emphasising the importance of full participation in every session, as the learning experience builds progressively from day to day.

The primary language of instruction throughout the lab is English, and there is a nominal fee of QR1,000 for participation.

To be eligible for the Short Script Lab, candidates must demonstrate a talent for writing drama, have previously written and directed at least one short film, and either be from or based in Qatar or the MENA region.

Applications for the Short Script Lab will be accepted until October 28 and can be submitted through DFI’s official website. The programme offers participants eight days for group work and five days for independent script development. All participants are expected to present an updated version of their short film script to their mentors and the DFI team by the conclusion of the lab.

Mentoring for the Short Script Lab will be provided by esteemed industry professionals, with Matthieu Darras serving as the Lab Advisor, and Britta Krause and Antoine Waked joining as Script Editors.
