Chianese shoots to win gold as Italians dominate

Doha: Alessandro Chianese won the men’s double trap event at the Qatar Open Shotgun Championship to continue the Italian shooters domination at the event yesterday.

At Lusail Shooting Complex, Chianese battled windy conditions and a strong challenge from Andrzej Oleinik of Slovakia and compatriot Adrea Vescovi, who finished third.

Qatar’s Masoud Al Athba and Rashid Al Athbi finished fourth and sixth respectively.

Chianese expressed his delight after winning the gold despite tough weather conditions.

“The conditions were tough today as wind speed was not constant, but am happy that I kept my cool and won the gold,” he said.

“Qatar Open was a good opportunity for me to test my skills against some of the top shooters at the beginning of the season.” 

Olympic and Asian Games medallist Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah, Abdulaziz Al Attiyah, Rashid Saleh, Masoud Saleh, Hassan Al Mannai, Reem Al Sharashni, Amal Ahmed, Hajer Mohamed will represent Qatar today and tomorrow in the skeet event.

The final of the will be held tomorrow.

Director of the competition Abdullah Ali Al Motawa Al Hammadi said all the three events of the championship have witnessed very strong competition from Olympians and world champions.

He was also pleased with the Qatar shooters’ performance in the double trap in which they reached the final stage. He also expressed his pleasure over presence of the International Shooting Sport Federation during the championship.

Earlier, Italy’s Michael Coles and Laetisha Scanlan claimed the gold medal in mixed team trap event yesterday. Seyed Babak Yeganeh Rohollani and Shiva Farahpour Bidgoli of Iran finished second while Sebastian Guerrero and Melanie Couzy of France secured the third place. In the trap final on Sunday Italians Erminio Frasca and Valerio Grazini came first and second.

In the women’s division, Italy’s Maria Stanco Silvana emerged as the champion, while Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova of Slovakia came second and Melanie Couzy of France secured the third place.

The competition features both men and women shooters. The participating countries are Qatar, Australia, Croatia, China, Finland, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, US, Ukraine, Malaysia, Poland, Peru, Pakistan, Japan, Lithuania, India, Georgia and Denmark.

The competition is been held in the trap, double trap and skeet categories.
