Qatar’s support to Yemen

Qatar has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts in Yemen since the start of the conflict in 2014. Qatar has been engaged in several development and humanitarian projects across Yemen, and the country has once again reaffirmed its commitment to stand by the Yemeni people.

In 2021, Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani directed the allocation of $100m in support of the efforts of the World Food Program in Yemen to support food security and to help prevent famine, and to assist the UN relief and urgent humanitarian programmes to alleviate the exacerbation of the human tragedy in Yemen.

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met Yemen’s Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Dr. Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak in Doha on Tuesday. The Prime Minister reiterated that the only way out of the crisis in Yemen is through negotiations between the Yemenis based on the outcomes of the national dialogue, the Gulf initiative, and the relevant Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution 2216. Yemen’s top diplomat thanked Qatar for its development and humanitarian support for the people of Yemen.

Contributions by Qatar and other Gulf Cooperation Council countries are vital for the people of Yemen, who have been hit hard by the years-long conflict, poverty and effects of climate change. According to the UN, the conflict in Yemen has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. It has also led to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with two thirds of the population currently in need of humanitarian aid.

Qatar has been committed to working to alleviate the sufferings of the Yemeni people ever since the outbreak of the conflict in 2014. Doha has also been supporting all regional efforts to achieve the aspirations of the Yemeni people and ensuring the unity and stability of their country.

Qatar has also supported the recent UN operation to safely transfer over one million barrels of crude oil from a decaying supertanker off the cost of Yemen to prevent a potentially disastrous oil spill in the Red Sea. Qatar Fund for Development had signed a financing agreement of $3m with UNDP to support the oil transfer efforts.

A UN-brokered cease-fire deal between the internationally recognised government and the Houthi rebels expired nearly a year ago. Despite the expiry, there has been a relative calm in the conflict. The UN, however, has warned that there is a threat of resumption of war if no new deal is reached.
