Ensuring food for all

Addressing food waste along with many other steps is necessary to ensure the basic right to food for all people of the world. Different government and private entities in Qatar have been working to address the food waste problem.     

The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has taken a commendable initiative to host officials and experts from all over the globe to discuss how to ensure the right of food justice for all people of the world.

The committee has announced to hold an international conference on “Food Justice from a Human Rights Perspective: Reality Challenges and Future Stakes” on February 6. Addressing food waste will be one of the major issues of the conference.

The international conference in Doha comes within the framework of the efforts of Qatar that aim to advance the food production sectors as it ranked first in the Arab countries and 24th globally in the World Food Security Index 2021.

The international humanitarian aid provided by Qatar to address hunger and food shortages through cooperation with the United Nations system, stems from its commitment to its humanitarian responsibility to respond to famine and food insecurity. Aware of what this contributes to maintaining world peace and addressing the causes of conflicts.

The conference aims to provide a global dialogue platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences, building capacities and reviewing legislation, policies, plans and programs concerned with food justice from a human rights perspective, and developing frameworks and foundations from which those working in the field of food justice and human rights can proceed.

This conference comes at a sensitive stage in accordance with human rights especially the right to food, as the number of people suffering from hunger reached 811 million around the world in 2023 an increase of 76 million people go hunger compared to 2022.

The conference has 5 goals, which it aspires to achieve in cooperation with the organizing bodies. The international community, countries, organizations and the private sector will be urged to deal with recurring global food crises, according to a human rights-based approach to establishing global food systems. It will also strengthen international solidarity to realise the right to food that is sufficient, available and accessible to all human beings by addressing economic and social inequalities and developing a generous and just global and national food policy.

The event will also strengthen work on Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, with a focus on protecting vulnerable and fragile groups.
