Qatar’s investment in transport infrastructure over the last decade has immensely benefitted the country. The FIFA World Cup 2022 gave impetus to the government’s efforts to upgrade transport infrastructure. There is an emphasis on sustainability as the country seeks to develop an environment-friendly transport infrastructure as part of Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 and Transportation Master Plan for Qatar (TMPQ) 2050.
The TMPQ, which was launched in June last year, will work as a roadmap for developing transportation networks nationwide in accordance with urban development, population growth and meeting the future demand for transportation.
The transportation sector saw remarkable growth in its services since the World Cup began until the end of the tournament. As many as 26,425 aircraft movements had been recorded at both Hamad International Airport and Doha International Airport during the mega sporting event.
The public transit system transported nearly 26.8 million passengers from November 18 till December 18. Over 18.416 million passengers were transported by the Doha Metro, 829,741 by Lusail Tram, some 150,800 by Education City Tram and over 27,600 by Msheireb Tram.
The public bus system transported up to 7.368 million passengers, taxis made 315,122 trips, while limousine and passenger transportation companies that use mobile applications reported more than 8.274 million trips from November 20 till December 18.
Doha Metro has transformed Qatar’s mass transit system since its opening in 2019, providing an efficient, affordable and environment-friendly solution to the masses.
The Metro network has ferried over 100 million people since then, a remarkable feat and a testament to the success of the government efforts to modernise the transportation sector.
It won praise of fans and visitors for its efficiency, safety and for making the commute completely free for all the fans. The ridership has steadily risen, reflecting the growing confidence of citizens, residents, and visitors in Doha Metro services underpinned by network connectivity to key destinations, tourist attractions and Hamad International Airport.
Besides, Doha Metro played an instrumental role in the success of key local, regional and international sports events including the Amir Cup.
The country is well on its way to achieving the goal of converting its public transport operation to the electric mode by 2030. Mowasalat (Karwa) announced in June last year that it had replaced all its taxis with hybrid electric cars, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
