The constant unjust smear campaigns against Qatar have been based on false accusations and mainly as the country hosts the FIFA World Cup. Recently, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) disclosed it was observing with great concern the increase in hate speech and islamophobia targeting Qatar.
Yesterday, the Shura Council affirmed its stance on the issue rejecting a European Parliament resolution on the human rights situation in Qatar.
In a statement after the Council’s weekly session, Speaker of the Shura Council H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim said that the resolution was based on false allegations and misleading information and continues the systematic, suspicious and heinous campaigns targeting Qatar over its FIFA World Cup 2022 hosting, expressing ultimate rejection for the resolution and its allegations.
The Council added that the anti-Qatar campaigns went unabated despite the ongoing tournament, which has seen Qatar warmly welcome thousands of multicultural fans “in an atmosphere dominated by enthusiasm and friendliness.” The statement also rightly rejected the resolution that triggered Qatari people’s resentfulness over its disinformation and being part of the anti-Qatar systematic conspiracy schemes.
It is no doubt that Qatar has implemented several reforms to ensure every resident and visitor enjoy their rights and freedoms according to UN resolutions and the country’s constitution. According to the Shura Council, despite all Qatar’s efforts to host the World Cup along with measures discussed by the European Parliament itself and the Shura Council during mutual visits, the European Parliament still back those who reject an Arab and Muslim country hosting a tournament of this magnitude -- a move that discloses hypocrisy, double standards and racism.
Like the NHRC stated recently, calling for action and an end to these baseless acts that create an environment for hate speech and hatred to strive, the Shura Council also noted that the European Parliament’s stance, based on this resolution, ignites calls of hatred between the East and the West, widens the gaps among cultures, and transcends all humanitarian and cultural values. They called for the organisation as representative for Europeans to promote an anti-hatred speech, back people-to-people efforts that combat it and bolster East-West communication, particularly with the championship bringing together various peoples in an atmosphere dominated by love and respect.
Recently, a visiting European Parliament delegation commended Qatar for its extensive labour reforms, transparency and promotion of workers’ rights. Qatar’s reforms have also been hailed as a model for many countries.
