Over the years, Qatar has actively contributed to international efforts to promote sustainable development and food security in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The country’s unwavering calls globally for LDCs to be supported to overcome developmental challenges like poverty eradication continues to resonate as the Fifth UN LDC Conference in Doha draws closer.
According to the United Nations (UN), the world’s LDCs are racing against time to deliver Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The remaining years need to usher in a new global partnership to ensure these 46 countries benefit from social, economic and environmental development.
Leading up to the meet, Qatar has stressed that the event will be transformative and contribute to bringing the desired change in the lives of millions of people in the least developed countries and supporting their endeavours to achieve the desired development gains.
The third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani disclosed the Doha Work Program for the LDC did not neglect to pay special attention to poverty eradication. He pointed out that one of the main focus areas is investing in the development of the societies of LDC, poverty eradication, and capacity building in order to leave no one behind.
Over five days of the event in Doha, world leaders will gather with the private sector, civil society, parliamentarians, and young people to advance new ideas, raise new pledges of support, and spur delivery on agreed commitments, through the Doha Programme of Action.
Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ali bin Khalfan Al Mansouri yesterday underlined that Qatar’s hosting of the conference from March 5 to 9 constitutes an opportunity to review the solidarity and support of the international community to achieve sustainable development for the least developed countries and realise prosperity and stability at the global and regional levels.
According to Al Mansouri, the high-level participation in the conference indicates the keenness of the UN member states to unify international efforts and solidarity in order to achieve sustainable development. He stressed that Qatar’s ready to receive partners from all over the world.
The once-in-a-decade LDC conference is an opportunity to accelerate sustainable development, tap the full potential of vulnerable countries, and help them progress on the road to prosperity. The UN House Qatar will be inaugurated on the sidelines of the conference.
