The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) under the leadership of its President H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani has recently launched its ‘New Strategy 2023-2030’ with a goal of achieving excellence in all fields related to sports.
Sports in Qatar have grown in leaps and bounds and the new plan which aims to step up efforts to lift sports in the country is expected to accelerate the progress. From hosting top-notch events to securing glory in major competitions like Olympics and the World Championships, Qatar has proved itself as a force in the sports world particularly in the region.
Qatar’s recent achievements include a hat-trick of world titles for star high jumper Mutaz Barshim last year - the first athlete to achieve the feat. Qatar’s top weightlifter Fares Ibrahim clinched one gold medal and one silver medal at 2022 World Weightlifting Championships. Qatar also made history at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics winning two gold medals and a bronze medal.
Qatar’s achievements were not limited to action, but the Qatari sports officials were elected for key positions at international sports bodies as the QOC President H E Sheikh Joaan was elected as the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) Senior Vice President last October. Moreover, H E Sheikh Joaan, Qatar Foundation (QF) Vice-Chairperson and CEO H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani and QOC Secretary General Jassim Rashid Al Buenain have been appointed to key roles on IOC Commissions.
The achievements are a result of QOC’s efforts over the years as since its foundation on March 14, 1979, the country’s top sports body has played an important role in raising sports awareness in nation and developing Olympic movement in accordance with principles of Olympic Charter.
The recently-launched strategy targets three key objectives: Ensuring Sport Excellence, boosting Olympic culture & Enhancing sport sustainable development. In effort to make these objectives more applicable, the QOC will keep encouraging all sectors of the society to be at the heart of the Olympic movement, support them to exercise sports and adopt a healthy lifestyle day in, day out.
Also, the QOC will push forward this approach to build up a number of elite Qatari sport teams with purpose of ensuring that Qatar supremacy is made in all sport fields, including training, administration and other technical aspects.
The QOC will also keep hosting the major sport tournaments with purpose of enhancing the sport tourism, national economy and improving the investment in the sport legacy that being gained from the major tournaments. The QOC’s strategy will surely help Qatar sports reach new heights in all aspects during these years.
