Qatar-Greece partnership

Qatar and Hellenic Republic opened their respective embassies in Athens and Doha in 2006 and the exchange of visits by leaders and senior officials of the two countries began. The visit by the then Greek President Karolos Papoulias the same year to Doha and the by the Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in 2007 to Athens strengthened bilateral relations.

The two countries have signed many agreements and memorandums of understanding in trade, media, air transport, military cooperation, tourism, culture, energy, investment and liquefied natural gas.

The recent visit of Prime Minister of Greece H E Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Doha came at a time when relations between the two countries are enjoying a distinguished period of cooperation with aspirations for further expansion of partnerships in economy, investment, trade, transportation, energy, culture, education, tourism and sports. It was the second visit by H E Mitsotakis, the first time he came it was in August 2022.

Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during a meeting with the Greek Prime Minister on Saturday discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them. In a post on his official X account,

H H the Amir said Qatar and Greece share distinguished relations built on friendship and common interests, pointing out that he discussed with the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic ways to promote the relations between the two countries for further growth and cooperation.

Greek Ambassador to Qatar H E Ioannis Ioannidis said that the Greek-Qatari relations are constantly evolving and that the aim is to enhance direct investments in the two countries, given the favourable investment climate in Greece and Qatar. The current and future areas of cooperation include energy, digital economy, infrastructure, trade and investments.

The two countries signed an agreement in 2008 to avoid double taxation. They have also an agreement for economic and technical cooperation. 

In May 2010, agreements were signed to amend some provisions of the air transport agreement and the exchange of news between the official agencies of the two countries, besides signing of MoUs for cooperation in tourism and energy sectors.

Qatar-Greece Business Council was launched in 2015 to be a platform for dialogue between business leaders and decision-makers in government between the two countries.

The number of Greek companies operating in Qatar is estimated at 64, including eight fully owned Greek companies, and 56 Greek companies with Qatari partnership.
