Another significant milestone in Qatar’s digital revolution journey as Google Cloud region was opened yesterday. The cloud region will help businesses grow, make smarter data-driven decisions, and scale to serve customers better. According to Google, the availability of faster and more secure cloud infrastructure, innovation and rapid development will be within reach of every company.

Regions allow providers to locate cloud resources close to internal or external customers. The closer customers are to the region where the cloud resources are located, the faster and better their experience will be. Hence, adding Doha as a cloud region would facilitate business development and put Doha in a good position as a digital hub in the region and globally. This opening takes Google Cloud’s cloud region count to 37, with 112 availability zones, serving more than 200 countries.

Furthermore, the new cloud region will help the Qatari government achieve its Qatar National Vision 2030 plan to sustain development and provide a high standard of living for its people. The new Doha cloud region will support the creation of 25,000 jobs in 2030 alone and contribute a cumulative $18.9 billion in higher gross economic output to Qatar’s economy Qatar between 2023 and 2030. It brings high-performance, low-latency services and products to customers of all sizes, from public sector organisations, to large enterprises, to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups in Qatar and the Middle East.

During the launching ceremony of the cloud region, Minister of Communications and Information Technology H E Mohammed bin Ali bin Mohammed Al Mannai said: “The launch of the first Google Cloud region in Qatar fits into our comprehensive vision to achieve the desired goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, including the establishment of a strong digital infrastructure with internationally agreed standards and policies that will lead us all towards a more efficient economy based on digitalisation and technology to facilitate quality of life and provide convenient solutions for various sectors.

“The new cloud region will contribute to giving impetus to economic and productivity growth and will allow various government and private companies and institutions within Qatar the opportunity to achieve significant efficiency gains by adopting flexible features in dealing with digital technology.”

The Google Cloud region opening in Qatar comes after Microsoft’s global datacenter region in Qatar was opened last year. These developments further emphasise Qatar’s goal of developing a robust ICT sector and promoting a sustainable economy that aligns with QNV 2030.
