Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held a meeting with Prime Minister of Iraq H E Ali Faleh Al Zaidi, while also separately receiving Turkish Foreign Minister H E Hakan Fidan yesterday. While the two dignitaries extended their condolences to the Amir on the passing of Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the meetings also discussed the ongoing military escalation in the region.
The Amir’s talks with the Turkish Foreign Minister focused on the latest regional developments and the diplomatic coordination needed to de-escalate tensions and strengthen regional security.
Similarly, discussions with the Iraqi Prime Minister underscored the importance of dialogue, adherence to diplomatic commitments and the implementation of understandings reached between the United States and Iran, including safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The recent attacks by Iran on Qatar and other neighbouring countries represent an unprecedented military escalation for the region. The situation took a dangerous turn this week when Iranian attacks targeted a water and power facility in Kuwait. Qatar said targeting electricity and water desalination plants in Kuwait crosses all red lines and constitutes an egregious violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has consistently and unequivocally condemned these attacks as violations of sovereignty and international law while reaffirming the country’s right to protect its security. At the same time, Doha has remained steadfast in advocating restraint, dialogue and respect for the principles of the UN Charter. The Gulf occupies a strategic position at the heart of global energy markets and international commerce. Any disruption to regional security, particularly around critical waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, carries implications that reach well beyond the Middle East. Escalation risks disrupting supply chains and increasing energy market volatility.
Qatar has consistently demonstrated that diplomacy is not a sign of weakness but of strategic foresight. Whether through mediation efforts, support for dialogue between conflicting parties or close coordination with regional and international partners, Doha has remained committed to supporting any effort for peaceful solution to conflicts. The responsibility now rests with all parties to exercise restraint, honour their commitments and choose dialogue over confrontation.
Respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law and sustained diplomatic engagement remain the strongest safeguards against a wider regional conflict. Iran must respect the sovereignty of all the states and cease its attacks forthwith.
