During a recent awareness campaign, the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) reiterated its dedication to protecting workers from the dangers of heat stress, a significant issue in a region grappling with intensified climate change. The NHRC’s commitment to addressing gaps in safeguarding workers and enforcing regulations marks a notable advancement in ensuring the welfare of Qatar’s workforce.
The recent event, aimed at shedding light on the harmful impacts of heat stress on physical and mental health, serves as evidence of the NHRC’s ongoing endeavors. Deputy Chairman Dr. Mohammad bin Saif Al Kuwari conveyed the committee’s mission to raise awareness among both employers and workers, forging a united front against labour law violations. His statements mirror Qatar’s dedication to the Qatar National Vision 2030, highlighting the government’s determination to prioritise labour reforms in line with global standards.
Central to Qatar’s success in upholding labor rights is its comprehensive legislation, which extends beyond mere restrictions on working hours. Dr. Al Kuwari emphasised the NHRC’s contributions to crucial policy recommendations, including combating child exploitation in camel competitions, abolishing the sponsorship system, and establishing protective laws for domestic workers and political asylum seekers. These initiatives exemplify Qatar’s commitment to nurturing a just and secure work environment.
Max Tunon, Head of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Project Office in Qatar, praised Qatar’s labour reforms, stating that they surpass benchmarks set by many other nations. The expansion of restrictions on summertime working hours, as outlined in Decree No. 17 of 2021, showcases Qatar’s proactive approach to safeguarding workers during extreme weather conditions. Tunon highlighted the importance of NHRC’s campaigns, stressing their vital role in educating workers and employers about their rights and obligations. The collaborative nature of these initiatives, which bring together diverse stakeholders, strengthens the dissemination of information and fosters a culture of adherence.
