Almost three decades ago, Qatar’s leadership set up a clear vision to position the country as a leading power in the region regardless of its small size. Qatar enjoys robust economic output, political stability, a good education system, and political will that enable the country to leverage its capabilities and resources to enhance its soft power assets and public diplomacy initiatives.
The implementation of this vision at a steady pace made the country one of the wealthiest nations in the world with highest annual per-capita income, thanks to its competitive and powerful economy.
This vision has also made the country emerge as international hub that attracts investors, scholars, professionals, activists, artists, and tourists alike. In the context of this vision, Qatar also heavily invested in sports diplomacy and hosted tens of global sporting events, of which the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was the most important.
Qatar has always proved its presence globally as an important country on the world map as the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdurrahman bin Jassim Al Thani stressed during his first interview with Qatar TV yesterday since his appointment as Prime Minister.
The importance of this interview lies in the fact that it informs the Qatari public about the government’s vision, programs, future plans, and answers people’s questions raised by a number of media professionals who attended the live interview.
The Prime Minister assured the citizens that the government strives for improving performance of the institutions and excellence in providing the best services to all segments of society, creating more job opportunities for citizens in both public and private sectors.
He also emphasised that Qatar keeps economic sectors open to global competition in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. He also underlined that the country will build on the success of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to host other tournaments, while health and education will remain having greatest emphasis.
He said that the health sector in Qatar proved to be resilient and even achieved what other countries found difficult to manage in terms of combating the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed that the government committed to providing the best health service and providing treatment abroad when needed.
In light of the country’s great position in world’s map, Qatar will enhance its vital mediation diplomacy and soft power as part of its strategy to ensure security and stability in the region. No one can forget the historical role played by the State of Qatar in many regional and international issues such as Chad, Afghanistan, Palestine, Somalia and Syria.
