Under Qatar National Vision 2030, a number of projects have been successfully implemented in the last many years to increase the number of public parks and green spaces in the country.
These green areas not only provide opportunities to people to adopt healthy lifestyles but also cast positive effects on environment tackling challenges of climate change.
Just last year, the Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality opened 12 new parks under its ambitious plan to build public parks across the country to ensure health and fitness of people.
The area of public parks reached 3 million sqm last year. As many as 12.9 million sqm green areas were also recorded in the country during the period of study while the irrigation of green area by treated water rose 75 percent. The Department also helped design 20 home gardens last year.
Meanwhile, measures taken by the Public Parks Department to overcome the challenge of water for irrigation are expected to increase the number of public parks and green areas manifold in coming years.
To reduce water consumption, the Department has deployed a centralised irrigation control system that allows the scheduling and management of the irrigation installation from a single location. The Ministry of Municipality in cooperation with Ashghal is laying pipelines of treated water along the roads for plantation.
The public parks are being developed across the country following the plans of the Ministry of Municipality. The lands for building new parks in the future will also be allocated by the Ministry of Municipality in cooperation with a number of entities concerned. The public parks are expected to increase significantly in coming years.
Qatar’s ‘Plant Million Trees’ initiative has also been a great success. As many as 62 embassies participated in plantation activities held in 2022 while 2,160 school students and a number of prominent personalities and fans of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 also planted trees under it.
The plantation drive will continue to achieve the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 which aimed at increasing greeneries in Qatar to keep pace with the fast urban development of the country.
The International Horticultural Exhibition (Expo 2023 Doha), which will start in October this year and will continue for six months, will also introduce advanced techniques and solutions to boost the agriculture sector and combat desertification for addressing climate change. The new techniques will enable the sustainable cultivation of trees and crops in arid lands play an important role in reversing desertification, evident around the world.
