Top sports events are back

After a short summer break, major sports action returns to Qatar with top stars set to descend on Doha, known as the world’s sports hub. Like every season, Qatar will host popular international competitions in the coming months besides organising the domestic events at its state-of-the-art venues.

The QTerminals Qatar Classic – a Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour Platinum tournament – kicked off at Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex yesterday with leading players battling for the coveted titles. This year’s edition is also marking the return of women’s event for the first time since 2015.

Egypt’s Nour ElSherbini who reclaimed the World No.1 spot and her compatriot Nouran Gohar are top title contenders. In the men’s event, World No.1 Ali Farag will be gunning to secure his second title of the season in a row, having claimed victory at the Paris Tournament. Home favourite Abdulla Mohamed Al Tamimi, who made history last year becoming the first Qatari player to reach the last-eight stage of a Platinum level tournament, will also look to shine in the tournament.

Qatar is also home to international football action this month as Al Annabi, preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and the Asian Cup, are busy gearing up for their friendly against Russia on September 12 at the Janoub Stadium, where they also lost to Kenya 1-2 after an exciting battle on Thursday.

Among the other highly-anticipated international events in the coming months will be the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2023 to take place at the renovated Lusail International Circuit. It will be a special event as the world for the first time will see the top class venue after it underwent massive changes to ensure a unique experience for all. The same venue will then host top riders of the world at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar 2023 MotoGP, scheduled to take place from November 17 to 19, 2023.

Before the event, there will be a treat for golf fans as the picturesque Doha Golf Cup will host the 2023 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, which will take place from October 26 to October 29, and is expected to attract top professionals of the sport.

The domestic events will also continue to be held during these months ensuring thrill for the fans. These competitions include the Ooredoo Cup football tournament, which kicked off yesterday with top clubs battling for the trophy. The Expo Stars League matches are also set to continue among these teams, with the prestigious Falcon Shield being the top prize at the end of the season.
