Qatar, Türkiye strategic ties

Qatar and Türkiye have maintained distinct, stable and growing relations. The ties between the two countries have witnessed a remarkable growth over the past two decades. The leadership of the two countries has made significant efforts to consolidate and advance bilateral relations since the setting up of the Joint Supreme Strategic Committee in 2014 as a mechanism for high-level dialogue and bilateral cooperation.

The committee has coordinated between the two countries and paved the way for bilateral partnership and benefitted both sides on diplomatic, political, economic and military levels. The mutual visits between the Amir of Qatar and the Turkish President have taken place regularly, and the two leaders have witnessed the signing of a number of agreements. Besides, the governments of the two countries have sought to develop a common vision and policies for many regional issues. 

Amir H H  Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met yesterday with Vice-President of Turkiye H E Cevdet Yilmaz. They discussed cooperation between the two countries and ways to enhance them, especially in the economy and investment fields. Minister of Finance H E Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari met with Minister of Treasury and Finance of Turkiye H E Mehmet Simsek, who is also visiting the country. They discussed bilateral relations, especially in the economic and trade fields.

Qatar and Türkiye signed 11 new cooperation deals during the eighth meeting of the Supreme Strategic Committee in Istanbul on October 14, 2022. The agreements covered cooperation in many fields, including diplomacy, media, culture, disaster and emergency management. The meeting was co-chaired by Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Turkish President H E Recep Tayyip Erdogan 

The total volume of trade exchange between Qatar and Turkiye witnessed a 106 percent increase in 2021 when it surged to QR6.9bn from QR3.34bn in 2016, while Qatari investments in Turkiye amounted to around $33.2bn by the end of 2020. 

The two countries have helped one another during the times of emergencies and crises. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was the first world leader to visit Turkiye after the devastating earthquake that struck the country in February this year.

Ambassador of Turkiye to Qatar H E Dr. Mustafa Goksu lauding Qatar’s support said that the directives of H H the Amir since the first hours of the disaster to launch an airlift for Turkiye played a key role in the urgent delivery of aid. Qatar also delivered 10,000 mobile homes for the victims of the earthquake.
