Qatar’s leadership and the government have been on the forefront of efforts to find diplomatic solutions to many crises afflicting the region, including US-Iran conflict. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on Monday received a telephone call from President of the United States of America H E Donald Trump.
The two leaders discussed the latest regional developments, particularly the efforts to reduce tensions between the US and Iran and to bring their views closer to enhance the chances of reaching a sustainable diplomatic settlement to the conflict.
The US President praised the role played by Qatar, under the leadership of H H the Amir, in supporting diplomatic efforts and facilitating dialogue between the parties, which contributes to enhancing security and stability in the region.
His Highness stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and adopting diplomatic means to address contentious issues, and the need for all parties to adhere to what was agreed upon within the framework of the MoU between and the US and Iran.
Qatar has been working with regional and international partners to prevent escalation in the region and find diplomatic solutions to the conflict between US and Iran. The country’s immediate focus is on preventing escalation and reopening the path for diplomacy. Qatar, along with Oman, Pakistan and other mediators are exchanging ideas between the parties and working towards a short-term solution that could pave the way for a broader agreement.
Qatar is hopeful that if the mediators can get a reduction of the costs, they would eventually be able to push forward towards a major deal that could bring peace in the region.
It rejects the use of the strategic waterway as a tool of political pressure, and stresses the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in a manner that safeguards the interests of all countries in the region, and that the management of the Hormuz must be based on international law and regional consensus.
