Enhancing Qatar, UN partnership

Since becoming a member of the United Nations in 1971, the State of Qatar has shown exemplary commitment to the UN's goals and initiatives in different fields. Qatar has actively contributed to the UN's efforts to maintain international peace and security and support the world's development process. Qatar believes that without close cooperation with various relevant UN bodies and the entire international community, the desired goals of all parties would not be achieved.

As an essential partner of the UN, Qatar plays an active role in addressing issues on the international scene to overcome common challenges and meet collective responsibilities.

Due to the existing partnership between the State of Qatar and the United Nations, Doha has become an international centre for many of the UN’s prominent organizations -- presenting an appropriate platform for global dialogue to maintain regional peace and security and promoting human rights.

In March, the 'UN House' will be opened in Doha. It will include several offices for UN agencies and affiliated organizations responsible for rapid response to humanitarian crises and climate change problems, resolving conflicts, combating the threat of terrorism and violent extremism, addressing the flow of refugees and promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The inauguration of the UN House comes as one of the fruits of Qatar's support, which includes an announcement on the sidelines of the Doha Forum in 2018  to fund UN organizations with 500 million dollars to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two sides.

Qatar has also provided during the COVID-19 crisis urgent medical aid to more than 80 countries. The total assistance amounted to more than $88 million -- part of it went to WHO.

Due to the solid and strategic partnership, Qatar has established over several decades, the country keeps fulfilling its commitments to support various UN bodies and entities through its regular or occasional financial aid aimed at supporting projects in education, climate change, humanitarian assistance, counter-terrorism, and research.

During the 2023 Partnership Forum meeting of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York, Qatar expressed its commitment to enhancing its partnership with the UN to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and address current challenges.

The Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shaheen Ali Al Kaabi, said during the same meeting that Qatar attaches utmost importance to Goal 17 of the SDG, as the goal is about establishing partnerships to achieve these goals.
