Qatar has prioritised investing in education as part of the country’s long-term development goals. Over the past two decades, higher education and scientific research fields have grown massively in Qatar, equipping the new generations of Qataris with top-notch education and cutting-edge technological skills. Human development is one of the key pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030, and the country’s leadership has invested significantly for the uplift of the education sector and to prepare the country’s youth to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, scientists and business leaders.
One of the many state initiatives to encourage excellence in education and research is the annual Education Excellence Awards, through which the country’s leadership has been honouring distinguished students, teachers, researchers and educational institutions. The 16th edition of the Education Excellence Day Award took place yesterday.
The occasion was graced by Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who honoured the 64 winners of the Education Excellence Award. The award recognises distinguished students from the preparatory school to the doctorate level, as well as outstanding teachers, schools and research works.
Meeting the winners on the sidelines of the event, H H the Amir lauded the students’ performance and urged them to continue excellence, distinction and creativity in all fields. The leadership’s interest and support has meant constant improvement in quality of education at all levels in the country. Qatar topped the list of Arab countries in the World Education Quality Index issued by the World Economic Forum in 2021. According to the report, Qatar ranked fourth internationally and first in the Arab region in the quality of education.
Similarly, Qatar University, which is the country’s primary institution of higher education, has made countless achievements and realised impressive results in global rankings. For 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, it was ranked 301-400 in Arts and Humanities, 251-300 in Business and Economics, 201-250 in Clinical and Health, 301-400 in Education, 101-125 in Engineering, 151-175 in Life Sciences, 176-200 in Physical Sciences, 251-300 in Psychology and 301-400 in Social Sciences. QU’s best performance is in Computer Science, ranking 95 and entering the top 100.
Even as the government updates the education system, it is constantly working to also preserve and promote national identity, values and heritage. Currently, the government is working on a number of initiatives to further update the education system as part of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
