Building resilience through smart planning

Qatar’s strengthening food security system offers a clear example of how long-term planning can translate into resilience when external conditions become uncertain. The absence of supply shortages during the regional crisis reflects the value of strategic reserves, local production and coordinated monitoring. High self-sufficiency in dairy and poultry further demonstrates how sustained investment in domestic capacity has reduced vulnerabilities.

Yet food security is not simply about keeping supermarket shelves stocked. It requires an integrated system spanning production, imports, storage, logistics, regulation and private-sector participation. Qatar’s National Food Security Strategy 2030 recognises this broader challenge, linking food security with sustainability, climate adaptation, food safety and effective partnerships.

The Ministry of Municipality’s work illustrates how this approach is being carried into practical governance. Its 2024–2030 strategy places food security alongside digital transformation and improving quality of life, reflecting an understanding that national resilience depends on both physical infrastructure and efficient public services.

The latest figures shared by Undersecretary Eng. Ali bin Mohammed Al Ali are particularly significant. Strategic reserves are being actively monitored, while local production continues to be strengthened. At the same time, artificial intelligence is reducing the time required for residential villa permits from more than a month to a single day.

Such applications show how technology can move beyond a slogan to become a practical instrument for improving government efficiency.

The planting of 10 million trees also represents a wider dimension of development. With 4.8 million trees already planted, the initiative connects environmental sustainability with urban development and quality of life.

Similarly, the digitisation of millions of documents and the expansion of the “Oun” application demonstrate how public services are being redesigned around accessibility and responsiveness.

Food availability, faster services, greener cities and more efficient government are tangible expressions of national development agenda.

Qatar’s experience demonstrates the importance of sustained preparation, investment, coordination and innovation.

As global supply chains, climate pressures and geopolitical uncertainties continue to evolve, maintaining that forward-looking approach will remain essential to safeguarding the country’s prosperity and quality of life for generations to come.
