Donald Trump’s has had a brush with so many people and organisations during his bitterly controversial campaign that nothing more comes as a surprise. After clashing with a woman broadcaster, journalists, the physically challenged, Muslims, Mexicans, the list is endless, the maverick Trump has traded barbs with the parents of a fallen American Muslim soldier. Khizr Khan, father of Captain Humayun Khan who was martyred by a car bomb in 2007, lashed out at Trump saying had it been for the tycoon his son wouldn’t have made it to the United States.
Trump has called for a ban on Muslims from entering the United States. His comment, which came in the early stages of the campaign ruffled many feathers, especially in Muslim countries.
His latest run-in with the Muslim couple has put him in a tight spot and the flustered Republican doesn’t know where to look. The normally recalcitrant Trump has taken on the wrong people this time. The life of a soldier sacrificed in battle is invaluable and support for his parents will be bipartisan. Probably, Trump didn’t realise what he was getting himself into when he joined issue with the Khans.
The father of the dead soldier had given an emotional speech at the Philadelphia Democratic Convention. He spoke of undivided loyalty to the nation and said he knew what sacrifice meant as his son was killed in battle, hitting out at Trump for not knowing what sacrifice is.
Trump tried to hit back in a television interview by saying he had sacrificed a lot. Sounding juvenile, he defended himself by saying that he had worked very hard. Whoever knew working hard can be really considered a sacrifice, especially in the way the real estate baron meant it to be.
Moreover, he said he had sacrificed by giving jobs to thousands of people who got to maintain their families as a result. But, as the journalist asked, how can creating jobs be called a sacrifice? Trump didn’t have much of an answer.
Failing to respond properly to Khizr Khan, Trump took on his wife. Being a Muslim, she wasn’t allowed to speak and so stood by silently, alleged Trump. The mother responded by saying she didn’t speak of her own accord as she was emotional. Slamming Trump for his remarks, she said he was ignorant about Islam and didn’t know what the word sacrifice meant.
Trump’s clash with the Khans marks another low in his campaign. This time, he has been caught on the wrong foot trying to mess up with the wrong people.
