Smart Pharmacy Program to be expanded

DOHA: As the health care sector grows rapidly in the country, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has initiated to adopt a new innovative international model to enhance the competency of pharmacists. 

The Smart Pharmacy Program will be initially introduced as a pilot project and gradually will be expanded to the national level, said Professor Moza Al Hail, Executive Director of Pharmacy, HMC, yesterday.

International educators will address a ‘Innovation Workshop’ in Doha, today and tomorrow, to introduce the concept Smart Pharmacy Program to different stakeholders  in the healthcare sector. Later the programme will be implemented in different phases.

“Smart Pharmacy Program has been designed to be a sustainable evidence-based educational initiative with all elements of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) cycle. It will include application and impact on everyday pharmacy practice, which will lead to improvements in patient care quality,” she said speaking to media persons.

“The new innovative international model Smart Pharmacy Program will offer structured, comprehensive and competency-based education and new approach to pharmacy practice in the country. Everyday new medications are coming to the market and new management methods are bring introduced. So a pharmacist needs to be updated, improve their competency,  skills and attitudes. This program will empower the pharmacists as well as motivate them,” she added.

“In next two days, our Innovation Workshop will introduce the concept, model and the program. In the second phase, we will train about 30 trainers from different healthcare facilities. They will train their colleagues on how to implement the Smart Pharmacy Program,” said  Dr Michael J Rouse,  Assistant Executive Director, Professionals Affairs and Director, International Services, at the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education in the US. 

The programme begun in Turkey five years ago and now being implemented in several countries including in Europe and the MENA region.
