Cairo: The Arab League has expressed deep concern over what it described as dangerous and rapidly unfolding developments in Yemen, following the Southern Transitional Council's refusal to comply with demands from the Presidential Leadership Council.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called for an immediate halt to escalation in the eastern Yemeni provinces of Hadramout and Al Mahra.
Aboul Gheit urged member states of the Arab Coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen to preserve the spirit of Arab solidarity at what he described as a critical moment.
He appealed for restraint and adherence to a unified Arab position backing Yemen's internationally recognized government, in line with repeated resolutions issued by the Arab League Council on the crisis.
He also reiterated the Arab League's condemnation of any military moves aimed at imposing a separatist reality by force, warning that such actions threaten Yemen's territorial unity and cause serious harm to the southern Yemen issue, which he said should be addressed through dialogue rather than the imposition of faits accomplis.
The Arab League chief stressed that separatist tendencies pose a threat to Arab national security, underscoring the organization's continued support for Yemen's unity and stability.
