DOHA: Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) has set up a station to produce and supply oxygen, in a paediatric hospital, ‘Saju’, in Aleppo City of the war-torn Syria.
Oxygen cylinders will be supplied to all hospitals in Aleppo and its suburbs for free. The station has a capacity to produce oxygen for about  1,000 patients a day.
There was an urgent need of an oxygen station due to the growing number of people being wounded in the conflict. Women’s hospitals also need oxygen for newborns and their mothers in critical cases. Responding to the need, RAF collaborated with Turkish humanitarian organisation, IHH, and set up the station.
It will meet the needs of hospitals in Izaz, Aleppo and its suburbs. RAF will bear the operation costs for at least six months.
The station will help reduce the burden on hospitals due to an increasing number of displaced families in the country and the blockade which has led to a shortage of medical supplies, especially oxygen for surgeries and critical cases of injuries.
Earlier, oxygen was being produced and supplied from a far away area to hospitals, was of low quality and not enough to meet all requirements.
The initiative is part of medical projects being implemented by RAF to support the health sector in the areas sheltering displaced people in north of Syria.
RAF has also provided humanitarian aid and medical supplies to Aleppo and many other areas of the country. Several development and educational projects were launched to improve the people’s living conditions and create educational opportunities for their children.
As a result, RAF ranked first among non-governmental organisations in term of providing aid to Syria in 2015. Since the beginning of the crisis, it has spent about QR400m on various projects.
