Farmers’ markets sell QR58m produce

DOHA: The farmers’ markets in Al Mazroua, Al Khor-Al Dhakhira and Al Wakrah have witnessed increase in sales as they concluded their fourth season on Saturday.
Total sales at the three markets increased to QR58m compared to QR39m in the previous season.
The markets sold 4,785 tonnes of fresh vegetables, 1,365 tonnes of fruits and 130 tonnes of fish.
They also sold 22,500 birds, 6,750 sheep and goats and 17,000 cartons of local eggs.
Compared to previous years, sales this season rose by 33 percent (vegetables), 32 percent (fish), 33 percent (birds), 223 percent (livestock), and 55 percent (eggs) while sale of imported fruits decreased by eight percent.
During the markets’ four years of operation, farmers increased the number of produce and for the first time this season has been extended to seven months.
