Some 260 young people, aged five to 13, took part in Qatar’s first National Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition. It challenged the cognitive abilities of young children from across Qatar’s independent and public schools enrolled in the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) Programme.

The competition, which was held last Saturday under the patronage of Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Secretary General of Qatar Olympic Committee, was hosted by Childhood Cultural Centre (CCC) in collaboration with UCMAS Qatar Centre and sponsored by RasGas Company Limited as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

Mohammed Rashid Eid Al Shahwani, Chairman of UCMAS Qatar, said, “I am very pleased to see such a large number of Qatar’s children participating in this national competition, which measures the performance of their mental skills and capabilities. I look forward to seeing Qatar’s children meet or beat their stellar performance at the upcoming global competition in Malaysia later this year. Last year, they ranked among the top participants from various Arab, Asian and European countries.”

Abdulla Al Mulla, CCC Public Relations and Communications Manager, said, “The attention paid to Qatar’s first National Mental Arithmetic Competition is a milestone along the progress and development path.”

Commenting on this event, Abdulla Hashim, Public Affairs Manager at RasGas said, “RasGas congratulates the winners of Qatar’s first National Abacus and Mental Arithmetic competition. We look forward to supporting other similar projects as social responsibility is integral to our business and our proactive CSR programme is aligned to the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2011-16.”
