DOHA: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)’s Heart Hospital is today hosting an event to mark the World Heart Day (WHD) to raise awareness about maintaining good heart health among staff, patients and hospital visitors.
World Heart Day (WHD) which is marked annually on September 29, is the biggest global awareness-raising platform for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) which include heart disease and stroke. Its aim is to help people live longer, better, more heart-healthy lives.
CVD is the world’s number one killer and is responsible for 17.5 million premature deaths, and by 2030 this is expected to rise to 23 million.
Last year in Qatar more than 20,000 patients were admitted to the Heart Hospital due to heart attacks and other heart-related conditions.
Dr Abdulrahman Arabi, Deputy Chief of Cardiology said, “Cardiovascular disease in Qatar and across the world is on the increase and although it can often be treated, prevention is the best way to reverse this trend. A healthy heart is a critical factor in living a healthy life and simple diet and lifestyle changes can dramatically reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.”
