Doha: Qatar Development Fund (QDF) and Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) have signed a $12m agreement to relieve the Syrian people amid persistent bad conditions and a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
It was inked by Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari, Director-General, QDF, and Fahad bin Mohamed Al Naimi, Executive Director, QRCS,
The agreement represents Qatar’s commitment and interest to help the victims of the current events in Syria, and try to alleviate the difficulties facing Syrians across the country.
The QDF grant will be used to support Syrian people in various fields, including food security, agriculture, basic needs, education, health and shelter. The urgent relief programme will be implemented by QRCS, under a humanitarian response plan supervised by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Al Kuwari said, “The QDF grant will help alleviate the suffering of people affected by the severe events in their country. The humanitarian situation is made even worse by the continuing war and harsh living conditions.” He said the intervention is part of QDF’s comprehensive humanitarian plan for Syria this year.
Since last year, agreements have been signed, including urgent relief for the beleaguered Aleppo, together with Qatari charities and financial support for Humanitarian Pooled Fund (HPF) to meet the critical needs of the Syrians.
Al Naimi said: “We highly appreciate our strategic partnership with QDF in humanitarian endeavours in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and other countries. “We reiterate our humanitarian commitment to permanent support of our Syrian brothers to mitigate their suffering until the crisis is over. We have several projects in Syria, covering primary and secondary healthcare, safety and security, food and shelter. We also care for the Syrian refugees in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraqi Kurdistan,” he added.
