
DOHA: Visitors to shopping malls will receive environment-friendly bags for free under a new initiative launched by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment on Saturday.
A total of 150,000 bags will be distributed to the public under the initiative ‘Go Green Qatar’.
The campaign is part of Qatar Environment Day marked on February 26 under the theme ‘No to plastic bags’.
Bags will be distributed by Green Corporation to visitors to commercial centres to raise awareness about the negative impact of plastic bags on the environment.
The launch at W Doha Hotel was attended by Abdullah Mohammed Al Kawari, Director, Awareness and Environmental Education at the ministry, Abulrab Al Shabi, Chairman, Qatar Green Corporation, diplomats and officials.
The event started with the screening of a short film on the damage caused by plastic bags to sea and land environment and humans, stressing the use of environment friendly bags made of organic materials.
“Let us start with ourselves and reduce the use of plastic bags which are damaging our environment and start using environment-friendly bags,” Al Kawari said his opening speech.
The aim of Green Corporation is to promote the use of environment friendly bags, said Al Shabi.
Dignitaries attending the event conveyed support to the initiative and its efforts for environment protection and to find environment-friendly solutions and alternatives.The Peninsula
