NEW YORK: St Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright tossed seven shutout innings to win a pitcher’s duel against Chicago Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks.
Wainwright (13-5) allowed just five hits and Matt Holliday homered in the first inning to give the Cardinals (56-48) the only run they needed.
Hendricks was solid in his third Major League outing, and allowed the one run in 6 1/3 innings.
Third baseman David Freese hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Right-hander Joe Smith (4-0) induced groundouts from all three batters he faced in the top of the eighth to earn the win for Los Angeles (63-41).
Detroit (57-45) starter Rick Porcello (12-5) tossed seven innings and took a no-decision.
Lucas Duda launched a go-ahead two-run home run, his third of the series and 18th of the season, boosting the Mets to a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Duda’s homer backed another stellar outing from Jacob deGrom. The rookie right-hander (5-5, 2.79 ERA) won his fourth consecutive start for the Mets (owning 0.66 ERA over that stretch), throwing 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball while allowing four hits and striking out four.
With the loss, Milwaukee (59-47) had their lead in the National League Central cut to just two games.
Pitcher Mike Minor worked effectively into the seventh inning, and the Braves backed him with a six-run third en route to a victory over the Padres.
Center fielder BJ Upton had two singles, stole a base and scored two times and the Braves (57-48) remain 1 1/2 games behind first-place Washington in the National League East.
Manny Machado drove in two runs, including a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning, as the Baltimore Orioles continued their extra-inning dominance with a win over the Seattle Mariners.
Baltimore (58-46) extended their winning streak in extra-inning games to six. The Orioles are 11-3 this season in games that go past the ninth inning. David Ortiz hit a mammoth three-run homer and Allen Webster earned his first victory of the season as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays.
With the win, the Red Sox (48-57) ended a five-game slide and snapped the Rays’ (51-54) season-high nine-game winning streak.
Dioner Navarro had a tiebreaking single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the New York Yankees for their second straight win at Yankee Stadium.
The Blue Jays (56-50) won for the seventh time in 10 games despite blowing a 2-0 lead and a pair of one-run leads. They manufactured the go-ahead run in the ninth against New York closer David Robertson (1-3).
Doug Fister pitched seven shutout innings and first baseman Adam La Roche delivered a two-run single, lifting the Washington Nationals to a win over Reds.
