Latest trends in esophagus treatment discussed at Al Ahli symposium

DOHA: Advanced treatment methods and technologies used in diagnosing and treating esophagus disorders are being discussed at a symposium organised by Al Ahli Hospital. 

The event commenced at Ezdan Palace Hotel yesterday and brought together more than 600 people in the field of healthcare.

Khaled Emadi, CEO of Al Ahli Hospital, opened ‘Al Ahli Esophageal Symposium’ in the presence of Jamal Hamad, Deputy CEO; Dr Abdul Azziz Abdul Wahab Hussain, Chief of Medical Staff, several other officials, international and local experts. 

The symposium features multidisciplinary experts in the fields of gastroenterology, surgery, otolarngology, pulmonology and oncology.  

Esophagus is the muscular tube that extends from the neck to the abdomen and connects the throat to the stomach. The most common problem with the esophagus is GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).  Other esophagus disorders include heartburn, cancer, and eosinophilic esophagitis.

“In two days, the symposium will cover common diseases related to esophagus disorders in Qatar such as  Gastroesophageal reflux, hernia. The symposium designed with the intention to present and discus the advances in esophagus disorders diagnostic and management,” said Dr Hussain, speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the symposium.  

According to Dr Hussain, transoral incisionless fundoplication, a minimally invasive treatment for gastroesophageal GERD is one of the important areas discussed during the symposium. It is one of the latest treatment methods available for GRED. 

Professor Sebastian Shoppmann, Head of Upper GI-Surgery, Vienna University Clinic, one of the international speaker at the symposium discussed about pathophysiology and changing epidemiology of GERD during the opening session. The symposium is an Accreditated Group Learning Activity (Category 1) as defined by the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners - Accreditation Department and is approved for a maximum of eight hours.  

“This is the second symposium organised by the Al Ahli hospital. It was arranged for 500 participants including physicians, nurses, pharmacists other healthcare practitioners. We have received more participants making the event a success,” said Hamad. The two day event will end today.
