San Francisco, United States: Hackers have stolen the personal data of most of the 1.4 million clients of Allianz Life, the US branch of German insurer Allianz said Sunday.

"On July 16, 2025, a malicious threat actor gained access to a third-party, cloud-based CRM system used by Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America (Allianz Life)," the company said in a statement sent to AFP. CRM stands for customer relationship management.

Hackers stole sensitive data using a social engineering technique, the company said, referring to a tactic of manipulating victims by pretending to be a company representative or other trusted person.

The attacker "was able to obtain personally identifiable data related to the majority of Allianz Life's customers, financial professionals, and select Allianz Life employees," the company said.

"We took immediate action to contain and mitigate the issue and notified the FBI," it said.

Based on the investigation thus far, no other information system at Allianz Life was compromised, the firm said, adding that it had begun notifying impacted individuals "with dedicated resources to assist them."
