Hong Kong---Hong Kong shares retreated 0.36 percent in the first few minutes of trade Wednesday following two days of strong gains and a sell-off on Wall Street.
The Hang Seng Index lost 101.82 points to 28,148.04.
But in Shanghai, the benchmark composite index added 0.57 percent, or 28.03 points, to 4,938.93 in early trading.
The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, gained 0.63 percent, or 18.21 points, to 2,902.87.
