Cairo/Washington: The Arab League Secretary General Dr Ahmed Aboul Ghait yesterday called on the international community to take urgent and effective action towards the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Syrian city of Aleppo.
Dr Aboul Ghait has sent messages on the situation in Aleppo to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), President of International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef).
Aboul Ghait explained, in the messages, the dimensions of the critical humanitarian situation faced by large numbers of civilians in the Syrian territories, especially in the city of Aleppo, the statement said. People who chose to remain in Aleppo are facing difficult conditions after the destruction of infrastructure during the military operations, which threatens to further worsen the humanitarian and health situation of these people if they do not receive urgent relief assistance, it added.
Meanwhile, Israel's Ambassador to Washington accused that the White House orchestrated a "gang-up" against Israel on last week's UN settlement vote, in the latest sign of anger between the longtime allies. Ambassador Ron Dermer said in an interview with CNN that his government plans to show evidence of the alleged US maneuvering in due time. "What is outrageous is that the United States was actually behind that gang-up. I think it was a very sad day, really a shameful chapter," the Israeli diplomat said.
