DOHA: The first international conference on research on humanities and social sciences in Qatar and the Gulf focused on several topics.
The Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Qatar University’s College of Arts and Sciences (QU-CAS) organised the event. Themed ‘State-of-the-Art Research in Humanities and Social Sciences for Qatar and the Arab Gulf,’ the two-day forum aimed to promote collaborative interdisciplinary research projects within QU and encourage young researchers to conduct innovative and cutting-edge work in their field of study.
Attendees included Dr Mazen Hasna, Vice-President, QU, and Chief Academic Officer; Dr Eiman Mustafawi, Dean of the college; Dr Kaltham Al Ghanim, Director, CHSS; and the college’s associate deans Dr Hassan Abdulaziz (Academic Affairs), Dr Khalifa Hazaa (Outreach and Engagement), Dr Steven Wright (Planning and Quality Assurance), faculty and students. Scholars included Prof Richard Bulliet, Middle East and Islamic History expert, Columbia University, and Associate Professor, History of Science and Technology, Ryerson University; and Dr Ingrid Hehmeyer, Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Vienna, and Director, Institute for Social Anthropology, Austrian Academy. The forum discussed research in humanities and social sciences such as linguistics, archaeology, history of science, anthropology, sociology, history, political science, international affairs and Arabic language.
