Doha: The Executive Director of New Doha Port Project, Nabeel Mohammed Al Buenain, said yesterday that 33 percent of the New Doha Port Project work has been completed and that its phases of implementation are going well.
Al Buenain paid a visit to the project along with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Chung Keejong; Greek Ambassador Ioannis Metaxas and Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore, Wong Kok Bonn, to learn about the project’s phases that have been accomplished.
Talking to reporters, Al Buenain said there are no problems that can delay the project’s scheduled completion in 2016.
The new port will enhance Qatar’s economic prospects, he said, calling on project execution companies to pay more attention to quality in accordance with the technical specifications.
He stressed that the project management will monitor the full implementation of each phase to ensure the successful completion of the project.
Answering a question by Qatar News Agency (QNA ) on whether three years will be enough to complete the remaining work of the project, he said: “Everything is going according to plan and we will do our best to meet our deadline.”
He pointed out that the QR27bn mega-project will span a 26.5 square kilometre area and said the value of contracts that have been awarded to Qatari companies is QR13bn.
Al Buenain urged all those who want the details of the New Port Project to visit the website (www.npp.com.qa) which provides detailed information in terms of the number of projects that have been awarded or accomplished, or even those that are under discussion, among other information.
“We are keen on providing all these details to ensure the principle of transparency in bidding process. When implementing a project we take into consideration its cost, time and management,” he said.
He also said that more than 50 percent of the project execution companies are Qatari firms, and that their number will increase in the future.
Al Buenain said four types of projects are being implemented: Infrastructure or buildings, those only implemented by Qatari companies, equipment or maritime projects. The foreign companies that operate here in Qatar are only allowed in the maritime projects, Al Buenain said.
Colonel Abdulaziz Ahmed Al Meer, representative of the Ministry of Defence in steering committee, said that the naval base constructed on an 5.4 square kilometre area will be earmarked for the Armed Forces.
