Doha: The Human Rights Programme at Doha Institute of Graduate Studies has organised its second Student Conference under the title ‘Where Should we Start: Individual Rights as the Basis for Collective Rights or the Opposite?’.
The conference discussed the interdependence between individual and collective rights and their patterns of interaction from different points of view.
In her welcome speech, Dr. Amal Ghazal, Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities said that a number of reports indicate a decline in individual and collective rights in many societies in the Arab world. This conference comes to shed light on the question of the primacy of collective and individual rights in societies riven by conflicts and wars, and the violations that take place individually and collectively.
The conference included three sessions during which the students discussed several themes, most notably “collective and individual rights” and “women’s rights in the Arab region” in addition to “case studies from Arab and Islamic countries”. Researcher Khalid Ishaq Ahmed, a candidate for an international law degree from Hamad Bin Khalifa University, presented a paper on the contradiction of the right to self-determination in the depths of international law, presenting a normative discussion on the principle of self-determination and its impact on human rights policy.
The second session opened with a research paper on “Arab women and their confrontation with crises in the region” presented by Radwa Amiri, a student in the Political Science and International Relations programme.
