DOHA: The government has allotted 23 huge plots of land for private companies to build labour camps with modern amenities.
The plots are located in different areas of the country which are Umm Zubaar, Al Khor and Umm Salal.
The allotment has been made by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment which was formerly known as the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.
The ministry told Qatar News Agency (QNA) yesterday that the aim of the move is to help the private sector house their workers in ideal conditions including health services and entertainment facilities.
The ministry has so far allotted 433 plots of land for the private sector to construct labour camps as the influx of foreign workers into the country has been increasing to engage in infrastructure development projects mainly for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. “We intend to make sure that the labour lodging situation in the country is suitable,” QNA quoted the ministry as saying.
In December last year, the ministry launched huge labour camp complex projects at seven locations in Umm Salal in the north of Doha.
Plots of land for the above said purpose have been earmarked and allotted and they are being developed in the sense that the necessary basic services are being developed.
Such plots of land are being allotted for modern labour camp complexes all over the country to help the private sector meet its increasing need to house their workers, whose numbers are increasing rapidly. The idea is to ensure that private companies have permanent labour camps equipped with facilities such as medical services and entertainment and sports. These complex projects have been awarded to the private sector on BOT (Build-operate/own and transfer) basis.
Under BOT a private entity receives a concession from the government via the civic and environment ministry to finance, design, build and operate a facility (labour camp complexes in this case) as stated in the contract.
Qatar is committed to making sure that labour camps meet the highest standards. A labour city built on the outskirts of Doha and which is already in operation is the most ideal such facility in the entire GCC region and the rest of the Arab world.
