DOHA: The Ministry of Education and Higher Education said yesterday it will start receiving nominations for its annual Education Excellence Award from October 16 until November 14.
The award, patronised by Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is conferred on distinguished Qatari students in different fields.
In a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters, the award committee said judging committees will finalise assessment from November 15 to December 15 and the prizes will be announced on January 16, 2017. Winners will be honoured under the auspices of the Emir on March 1, said Dr. Hamda Al Sulaiti, Chairperson, Development Committee, which is part of the award committee.
Dr. Al Sulaiti, along with Hassan Al Mohammadi, Chairman, Executive Committee, and Director, Public Relation Department at the ministry, highlighted the programme for this year’s award.
Dr. Al Sulaiti said the government offers the annual Education Excellence Day Prize to distinguished Qatari students in different fields to spread a culture of creativity and excellence in Qatari society.
The award aims at encouraging students to gain more knowledge, integrating individual and institutional efforts to improve education outputs and ensuring that quality education copes with global standards and levels.
As part of preparations, workshops will be held between September 25 and 29 to introduce the award’s aims, categories, application procedures, terms and conditions, said Dr. Al Sulaiti.
Workshops will be held under the supervision of the award development committee, executive committee and judging committees.
Dr. Al Sulaiti said the award is open to all schools and includes eight categories — primary school students; preparatory school students; high school students; university graduates; PhD holders; distinguished teacher; distinguished school; and scientific research.
The award will mark its 10th anniversary in the presence of former winners and hold a documentary exhibition in collaboration with Katara from this November 14 to March 18, 2017, said Al Mohammadi, Executive Chairman, Organising Committee. The exhibition will host every day 10 former winners who will share experiences. The aim is to bring all winners together, create alumni and share their outstanding experiences.
When the judging committees complete their work, the chairman of the executive committee will submit results for final approval on December 22, Al Mohammadi said.
According to a schedule set by the organising committee, results will be approved on January 2 and announced after two week from the date of endorsement, he said. To mark the 10th anniversary, the committee will launch a mural at Katara beach which will include the names of the winners along with a book and a documentary, My Journey to Excellence.
Independent and private schools will receive applications for prizes for primary; preparatory; high school; distinguished teacher; and distinguished school to submit them to the committee through the ministry’s public relation office.
Applications for prizes for university graduates; PhD holders; and scientific research are to be submitted to the organising committee.
